Abolish the Electoral College is back in the headlines, so here is a history lesson for you.

Ever since the election of Donald Trump, the electoral college has been in the left’s crosshairs. Why, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote! She should be the winner! Kevin Gutzman, Brion McClanahan, and Tom Woods discuss what’s so dreadfully wrong with this conventional way of thinking.

The professors bring up a problem with popular vote vs the Electoral College.  Hillary Clinton did not win very many states, but she did win the 2 largest states by population New York and California.  Her winning was a forgone conclusion.  So if you were running for president, would you waste time and money campaigning in those states?   No you would not.  Trump conceded those states, therefore there was a huge popular difference.  Brion McClanahan come up with a good analogy.  It’s the baseball World Series, and a team in down 10 – 0 in the 3rd inning.  That team would take out their starting pitcher, and not use their best relievers, and definitely not their closer.  The fact the team would win by 10 runs, does not matter.  It is only 1 game of the 7.  Think about it.

On the flip side, if we had a popular vote, the candidates would only have to campaign in New York and California.  And ignore the rest of the country.  A last issue brought up with popular vote wins, is over 3 million illegals voted.  The voting system has to be fixed before you even consider a change.
